Never has it been so apparent just how important diagnostic tests are for providing the data to make the right decisions. Of course, the importance of accurate diagnostic testing is not new. In vitro diagnostics (IVDs) already play a key role in today’s healthcare system, influencing over 66% of clinical decision-making, while accounting for only about 2% of total healthcare spending.1
Diagnostics are such a fundamental aspect of modern medicine that the World Health Organization has designated 122 test categories as essential.2 Now, the so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution, or 4IR,3 is drastically changing the diagnostics landscape, with new diagnostic trends having the potential to revolutionize healthcare and improve health access, outcomes, equity, and costs across the board.
